why did he get clattered? Sounds like he thought he had called a mark?

Hmmm maybe you didn't read my post properly.
He didn't open his mouth, he didn't say a word, he didn't call the mark.

Unfortunately my crystal ball was in the menders, so I was unable to know what he was thinking.

I was interested to know -- how did he get to be 'clattered' ? what happened?

Which now seems to be the official claim for a Mark. I can't remember when I last actually heard a loud call!
As someone who has been clattered after (apparently) not shouting Mark loud enough, I applaud this change.

I once got marked down by an assessor for not giving a mark (before the trend of indicating with an arm).
The player caught it and as he did I was right in front of him. I watched very carefully and his mouth never opened....but everyone else on his team shouted "Mark".

I called play on no mark and he got clattered.

Assessor said I heard him call mark, I said no, you heard his teammates call mark, he never said a word.
Assessor said that should have been good enough!
I wonder what would have happened if the full back stepped the first defender and then took off up the wing and then you pulled him back because a teammate had shouted mark?

What change? The only change is catcher doesn't need both feet planted. Still to call (and be heard to call) 'mark'

Personally I feel that in lower level games and certainly in youth games whistle should be blown where a player seems to think they will be awarded a mark and has stopped playing rather than wait for them to be unexpectedly 'clattered'!

He would have been annoyed with his team mates

I can agree with that once.
“I’ve given the mark even though you didn’t call it for your own safety since you were just standing there and were about to be clattered. Next time, if you want the mark, make sure you call it or it will be a live ball.”
Scrum restart is an option.

Alas no

The referee awards a scrum for any other reason not covered in law.
In the scrum zone at the point closest to the place of stoppage.
The team that was last moving forward or, if neither team was moving forward, the attacking team

But in practice yes.
