    law change thought

In junior rugby, a scrum cannot go more than 1.5m

    law change thought

Not really. 5m scrums are generally awarded not when a ball is dropped right on the 5m line, but when any number of things happen between the 5m line and the dead ball line. Generally I would call ‘5m Scrum’, as opposed to just ‘scrum’. Of course this all hypothetical, but in the unlikely...

    law change thought

Well yes, my thought process was really around the elite level anyway. Maybe make push over tries allowable from a 5m scrum?

    law change thought

referring way back to the initial post; what a very odd idea 🤔🤔 I really don’t understand how this would help anyone, in a way that the 9 putting the ball in straight wouldn’t. can see any logic to it. Anyway, if I could change one law it would be to bring the 5m scrum pushing law that we...

    Ardie Savea citing

I thought that the Haka got rid of the throat slitting gesture a few years back? Precisely because it was considered inappropriate.

Quick tap and pass to runner

I did a game on Saturday when one side barely won a single lineout. They were absolutely dominated in the line. Didn't stop them also kicking around 70% of their PK’s to touch though. Quite bizarre.

Quick tap and pass to runner

im ashamed to admit that I thought the cavalry charge was still illegal 😬

    Will you continue in Rugby?

I’m sure I’m not alone here, but I started playing rugby in 1974, and I have seen many, many law changes. Many of them quite considerable, and I do recall plenty of doom-mongers predicting the death of the game over the years. I don’t believe we will end up ‘below the waist’ but even if we did...

IRL v FRA - Home Broadcaster Advantage?

Fascinating insight, so thanks for sharing that. I tend to agree on your hypothesis around Barnes influence on the team around him, although this is a real shame if accurate.

    Will you continue in Rugby?

Ciaran, I do not generally have an issue with high tackles. i tend to ping a marginal/debatable one early on and it tends to set a positive precedent then. Later in the game it can creep in again when players are tiring, but not rally an issue. is your issue because of the RL influence in...

    court case

yes well firstly if she does win, it will be nowhere near £10m, but secondly I’m assuming that she is covered through the clubs insurance?

    court case

Well the implication here, is that the tackle was legal because it was not sanctioned on the pitch. I would imagine that this can be reasonably challenged but I expect that Is why they’re at the high court. of course this is arguable, but then most of the points raised in the article are...

any thoughts on this passage of play?

Gosh, whilst it is probably wrong by the letter of the law, I would never, have never pinged anybody for holding on unless it is preventing the oppo from stealing the ball. or, I suppose, trying to move with the ball whilst on the ground. What I tend to allow also is the tackled player to pass...

    Diving score in the corner...

For me, the difference is the danger to the tackler. I understand there is an enormous amount of nuance around this, however if the ball carrier is jumping into a tackler, then there is considerable (and unexpected) danger to the tackler who would be set to tackle a player on terra firma...

any thoughts on this passage of play?

Thats right Didds, the SH scored, the lad who set the ball back definitely did nothing wrong, he placed the ball, and was just pushed forward by the momentum of his support players. Defo no second movement.

any thoughts on this passage of play?

Actually it occurs to me that another odd thing happened in this game. One of the team was driving toward the line, in a proper ‘grown-up’ pick and drive way. One of the attackers was stopped just short of the line, I called ‘short’ and the lad pushed it back, whilst his mates protected the...

Well coached scrum halves round your way 😉

any thoughts on this passage of play?

Absolutely not. That would have been inconsistent with the rest of the game. The funny thing was that the initial ruck didn’t extend past the try line but the 9 called for another forward to extend it (over the try line), and I thought “this ain’t gonna end well”. But it did. Good kick too.

    Diving score in the corner...

Yeah I’m with you Stu. i don’t doubt that his intention was to avoid being tackled, but this to me is clearly a dive not a jump. My view is that this is the sort of thing that excites the game.
