Where are you this weekend - 2023/24?

...just last weekend, same locale. Temp in the 80s, sky-high humidity due to the heavy rain from Thu/Fri. Both women's teams asked if I would allow for a hydration break 😄 Men's match on the neighboring pitch, visiting side (varsity program, so a lot of foreign students on scholarship) had...

    Ending the game vs “coaching”

I always give the time at the moment it is asked, and I get puzzled looks when my answer to someone right after a try is different to what it is immediately prior to the subsequent kickoff. In my scenario last weekend, a player did question why the game hadn't ended. I answered "the ball was...

    Ending the game vs “coaching”

Appreciate the advice I probably should stick to "time is up" due to the law change, didn't think about it until this scenario. In more lenient circumstances (ie blowout or friendly), I do use this phrasing. I did also clarify this to the winning side afterwards, I just didn't want backed into...

    Ending the game vs “coaching”

I had a collegiate conference game that featured a number of newer players on both sides. At 79:01, Blue scores. After the conversion, Blue is down 1. As I jog back to the center at 79:55 I tell both teams “next dead ball ends it.” Blue catches the restart, but 2-3 phases in is penalized for...

    RWC 2023

I read it as Biggar was offside prior to tackling the Fiji 9. Even if the ball was out before the tackle, if Biggar was in an offside position prior to the tackle, that is *still* a yellow every time.

    RWC 2023

Even if the defending side were squeaky clean in the build-up, IMO this should be a card this every single time at any level of competition.

Where are you this weekend - 2023/24?

College rugby kicking off in earnest - Illinois State @ Northern Illinois men. ISU was top dog for a long time, but now has stiffer competition, and will likely be looking to run up a big score. NIU is still working on a rebuild. Current forecast is 60s with a slight chance of rain, but I...

Where are you this weekend - 2023/24?

First "real" run out of the fall NW Indiana @ Peoria - visitors are regular bottom feeders that struggle to travel, home side is on the rebuild, coming off a tough home loss, and will likely want to run up a basketball score in case the standings come down to point differential (7-team league...

How's things going in your area?

Within my area U19 and below is dead College, one D1A mens side (UIUC), a D2 mens side (Illinois State), and one D2 womens side (UIUC) within a 90-mile radius - Illinois State women are on mandated suspension until Fall 2024 (hazing) Club, the club in my city struggles to put together 15 for...

Jersey Colour Issues for Comms ... any advice?

When a team is predominantly yellow, I default to gold for brevity. The only time I've confused teams is when I had to go to secondary/tertiary colors for both due to clashes (some combo of black/white/red are strikingly common).

Where are you this weekend - 2023/24?

Old Boys in Urbana, so usually splitting ref duties with another certified referee. Looking to test fitness and survive - high temps have been pushing 100 (with heat indices > 110) for a week, but Saturday is supposed to be the first day with lower (but still warm) temps.

    Drop goal unsuccesful

I disagree, I think the law is quite clear with the exception regarding an attempted DG. Also, for the team that attempted a DG, why should they be rewarded with a 5m scrum from a mis-cue?

    Naughty Sam

Andrew Symonds took matters into his own hands, twice even. I don't blame a player for wanting to take care of the situation, but as a coach I would be peeved at a player taking an unnecessary risk

Refereeing niggle in U14 to U16 age groups

I'm perfectly fine with a 12yo learning the hard way not to take matters into their own hands outside of the laws. In post-match socials, I've chatted up players who I saw had the red mist, and reminded them that this is rugby - if you want to get back at someone, there are ways to do it that...

Where are you this weekend - 2022/23?

In this set of circumstances, it didn't rise to the level of abuse - coach was told to leave the playing enclosure (after coming on to the field to complain about a call), then returned later. It was brought to the attention of the referee manager, who escorted the offender away. At the end of...

Where are you this weekend - 2022/23?

Result - one coach didn't listen, and a report has been filed with the SBRO (which has a Code of Conduct, since this technically doesn't fall under referee abuse). This weekend - BelleVegas 7s on this side of the Mississippi. Mens, Womens, and HS divisions. A wide geographic spread of teams...
