    Hoggy's Monster Drop Goal

If you look carefully it hits the spidercam wire on the way in. And we all know what that means don't we! :) https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2637560422970773&id=100001505220630

[Line out] Another Line Out Question..

Lineout to blue. 6 blue players form their line and are matched by 6 red forwards. The defending hooker is standing correctly in the tramlines and the blue hooker is holding the ball ready to throw in. Neither team have a player in the receiver position. Just before the ball is thrown the...

    [Law] Goggles!

https://www.world.rugby/news/424958 I wonder if Specsavers will do a ref's version with a HUD action replay feature? :)

[Law] kick off gone 10 then blown back.

I actually had my first example of these mythical exam questions of a scenario last saturday!! Half the players twigged and half stopped where they were. It needed a loud "blown back play on!" From me and even then there were one or two confused expressions! :)

    Don't Ask!

Not specific to refereeing, but I thought some of you might enjoy this video which has been made by a media student documenting my club's 150th anniversary year. https://youtu.be/RXpZDYKUOI8

    [Assistant Referees] AR5

I have an AR5 coming up for a youth competition final. I've only gone as low as AR3 before! My assumption is that I will look after one team's subs, yellow cards etc, be the liaison for the team manager, manage the perimiteter area, have a copy of the competition regs, have a drink to run to...

    [Kit] Boots

Is there anything to say a referee must wear rugby boots? I'm thinking the ground will be hard over the weekend and my Inox fell/trail shoes would grip better and be faster and more comfy than my old faithful Adidas Flankers!

Bridgend v Llanelli - Penalty Tries

A couple of interesting ones from this very entertaining game last weekend. Ben Brakespeare was in the middle and made a couple of decisions which might provoke some discussion. Link to Scrum V coverage here: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0004bpg At just shy of 26 minutes Bridgend have a...

[Law] Question from World Rugby law quiz

"The ball is stationary on the ground inside the defending team's in-goal area. An attacking player lying on the ground in touch-in-goal, reaches over the touch-in-goal line and places his hand on the ball. What is the correct decision?" I got the answer wrong - what should it be?

Pat Lam takes Exeter to task on being offside at the lineout..

[In-goal] Who took the ball in?

Intetesting passsge of play in the Ospreys v Scarlets game this weekend - Ospreys hoof the ball downfield and Steff Evans fumbles it on his 5m line but without knocking on. He tries to evade the arriving back row but gets caught by one leg and brought to ground. Tipuruc and Alan Wyn are all...

I thought I was losing it..

Reading the 2018 law book, 14.6 says a tackled player who has got back on their feet can play the ball from any direction. I could have sworn that changed this year, thought I. Lo and behold the online version adds "may play the ball from the direction of their own goalline". One for...

    [Mini/Midi] WRU Under Tens Question

One for the Welsh refs here: Im reffing U10 for the first time on Sunday. I've read through the variations to the standard U19 rules. The U10 bit specifically says a scrum is to be awarded for ko and forward pass, but does not mention 5m scrums at all. Does that imply no 5m scrums or that you...

[Tackle] Tackled player holding ball up to allow a quick pass.

I coach youngsters as well as being a newbie WRU level one ref and went to a coaching talk by one of the Welsh region's skills coaches recently. One of things he was looking to advocate was getting a tackled player to hold the ball up to enable the scrum half to get a quicker pass away in...

[In-goal] Defender driven back into his own in-goal grounds the ball..

Firstly I am just starting out on my refereeing journey so please excuse lots of stupid questions! I understand that a tackled defender moving back ftom the field of play using their momentum can immediately touch down in-goal and get a 22 drop out, whereas if the defender carries the ball in...
