I was looking through the videos on the Barbarians web site and found an interesting clip: http://www.barbarianfc.co.uk/video/video_view.cfm?videoID=3

The #10 for NZ clearly knocks on, and the referee plays advantage for what seems to me like quite a long time. I don't think we'd see such a long advantage today! But, he got it right because the Barbarians gained possession and all was good and right in the world.

(BTW, why were the Boks wearing such high numbers in this game: http://www.barbarianfc.co.uk/video/video_view.cfm?videoID=1)

(Also, I think I would have prevented "one of the greatest tries of all time" with a call for dangerous tackle... sigh. http://www.barbarianfc.co.uk/video/video_view.cfm?videoID=2 )

Current Referee grade:
Level 2
Here's rugby how it used to be played.

The Lions are in red. For those of you with black & white TV, they're the team that aren't green. :D

Presumably this isn't just one game as the ref is dressed differently half way through.

I don't see being in the 70s as any great advantage :hap:

high numbers due to tour squad numbers
in those days you kept your tour squad numbered shirt for all games ... this helped spectators know who was who from the tour progs which were printed well in advance

chopper - I have replied to that on the other BCM thread. It was the thirteenth stroke of a crazy clock.

But the tackle was against the Barbarians so why shouldn't advantage apply?

You are right, it should. I was more meaning to say that today if a tackle was that high I would expect it to be serious enough not to play advantage...
