VIDEO Horrible Offside Call Denies Mexico, Dos Santos In World Cup 2014 Match Against Cameroon

Mexico's Giovani Dos Santos thought he put his country up 1-0 against Cameroon, but officials ruled the play offside in the 11th minute Friday. Reuters

Officiating for the 2014 World Cup came under scrutiny on Thursday when Croatia appeared to be the victim of a bad penalty call in their loss to Brazil in Group A action. In the next game of the tournament, and also in Group A, it appears that Mexico were victimized by a bad call, as well.

In the 11th minute of their match against Cameroon, Mexico midfielder Hector Herrera crossed the ball to forward Giovani dos Santos inside the penalty area. Dos Santos promptly ripped a shot past goalkeeper Charles Itandje.

So, it was goal, right? No. Turns out the offside flag was up on Dos Santos. Replays showed that the 25-year-old was indeed inside the Cameroon defense and the goal should have been allowed. It was close, but the call should have gone in Mexico's favor by most accounts.

Roughly 20 minutes later, Dos Santos headed the ball into the net, but it was also called off due to an offside call. Dos Santos immediatly protested the call.

However, this time the officials may have gotten it right, though it was close. Both Dos Santos and Herrera could have be ahead of the defense after a deflection from what could have been a Mexican player. On replays, it may have been touched by a Cameroon player.

Needless to say, Mexican fans may feel they have been robbed by two very close offside calls.

Cameroon may have gripes with the officials, too. A clear foul inside the penalty box should have awarded Cameroon a penalty kick.

The match is still on-going and scoreless in the first half.

While Brazil entered the tournament as the clear favorite to win the group, the runner-up spot is expected to be wide open. Two teams advance out of the four-nation group.
