Hi all, question from a game I officiated today if you don’t mind. Ball passed back by defending team into in-goal, the clearing kick was then charged down in-goal by an attacker and was grounded by defender. My question is whether a charge-down in-goal is a knock on or not and therefore should it have been a goal line drop-out rather than a scrum 5?

Thanks in advance.

Definitions:
Playing area: The field of play plus the in-goal areas.

Law 11 knock on
1. A knock-on may occur anywhere in the playing area.
...
5. The ball is not knocked-on, and play continues, if:
a. A player knocks the ball forward immediately after an opponent has kicked it (charge down).

QED the action is within the playing area, and is a charge down and thus is permitted.

Scrum 5.

You've said it was a charge down. Why would it be a knock-on? The law is claarr that a charge down is allowed in goal (see didds post). Indeed if you considered it a knock on purely because it was in-goal then it would be deliberate and therefore a penalty (the player is making no ttempt to regather the ball).

That’s great, thanks, that definition clears up my uncertainty. Cheers.

He had me in the first half where I thought this was going to turn into a question about who brought the ball in-goal after the charge down. Did not expect it to ultimately be a question about a knock on lol.
