For me it was a deliberate knock forward, but tbh I see both sides and I so i think that Law 11 (knock on and throw forward) is not entirely clear

I'm not claiming this approach always works, but when I'm not 100% certain, I often consider how the players would react to a decision as a guide to making the correct call... watching on TV, I don't recall any players complaining when the try was awarded to Marchant; however, had a penalty been awarded I think most people in that stadium would have been scratching heads.

In general I do agree with this approach, it helps us get to the *best* decision.

but doesn't tell us what is the lawfully correct one
