Not necessarily, it depended on whether the ball had passed the plane

I should have been more clear, I was making the assumption that the ball was in the same place (above FoP) in both scenarios.

Apologies, yes of course - lineout back. Was getting confused between my core question and the ancillary one about drop-goal attempts going dead. Sorry!

I remember the wise words of The Percy on here, when I queried the law change; it confused the hell out of me.

A player can no longer catch a ball in play and make it dead (rolling or otherwise) and get the possession. [If the ball hasn't crossed the vertical plane of touch etc] then he's caused it to go in to touch, in-goal or dead.
