Girls U18 7s.
Player going in for a score and during the act of touching the ball down the opponent attempts to stop but it’s a high tackle - in this case a pull down from the back of the collar.

How do you penalize something that happens during a score? The try was awarded as it was effectively put down despite the foul play.

Should it be a yellow card? Can’t be a penalty try as the score was not thwarted. What other options are there?

Penalty try if the try could have been scored in a more advantageous position if not for the foul play.
Otherwise treat it the same as you would anywhere else on field ie penalty only , yellow or red.

If foul.play occurs after or as the try is scored you also have the option to restart with a penalty.

Context on what you need to achieve and manage in the game depending on the mood, penalty count etc.

I’ve done everything from ignore it / have a word, up to penalty try and yellow card. Just this season I had a diving seatbelt that became a yellow (repeated infringements) and a penalty restart

So if it was in the "act of scoring" I'd rule out a "... try being scored in a moreadvantageous position"
So you award the try and then you assess if the foul play requires:
1: A "word"
2: A YC
3: A RC

You cannot award a PK from the restart.

Broadly correct yes and I agree, in my scenario I deemed the tackle attempt as diving in after the try had been scored, and I suited what I needed to achieve in that game

I was replying to the OP's scenario. A such a penalty restart is not an option. We can't fabricate evidence.
"Broadly correct" ? What part is "not correct"?

Either the FP is up to and including "in the act" or it is "after the try is scored" Now there is a small grey area ofinterpretation but tread carefully in managingvitvto achieve what you want rather than correct.

Great feedback - I’m in my first year of reffing.

Which leads to: I’m not clear in the idea of a restart PK. Are we saying that you can award a penalty during/after a try is scored and that - instead of a standard drop kick-off restart - the awarded team now has a PK mid field?

Yes.....if the penalty is awarded after the try is scored.

This concept also applies if a penalty is awarded for foul.play while the ball is dead.....the mark would be where play would otherwise have restarted.

if the foul play INFRINGEMENT occurs whilst the ball is dead, not if the penalty is awarded then. (I know that you will know that, but others have been known to take our words too literally.)

AFTER the Try is scored not during.

Makes me wonder about a penalty try.

Defenders collapse maul that would have led to probable try. As the ref is ambling under the posts to award the penalty try (but prior to awarding PT), defending player punches attacking player. After cards, etc what would the restart be?

What if it had been an attacking player punching a defending player?

Presumably Sir has blown the whistle to stop play. Therefore the foul play has occurred while the ball is dead so the penalty would be awarded where play would have restarted ie half way.
The "what if attacking player" bit is easy!

So, ref blows time off following the collapsed scrum and does the usual ref stuff ... fossicking for card, consulting with AR, admonishing captain, scratching balls, etc, when attacking player punches defending player. Continue to award PT & PK restart to defending team? Or does the punch trump the collapsed scrum so no PT (which hasn't been awarded yet)?

If I award a PT I blow the whistle (I also vocally let the player know it is a Penalty Try) immediately and then after checking for an escalation I go under the posts to give the PT signal. However, in my opinion, I have awarded it at the blow of the whistle so in your two scenarios I restart with a Penaty to the non punching side. Card as appropriate.

defending punch - PK on halfway to "attackers"(place of restart) ?
attacking punch - PK on half way to "defenders" (place of restart) ?
I know yous ay the PT hasnt yet been actually awarded as in whistle blown between posts and arm raised, but as you amble towards the posts its pretty obvious what you are doing/going to do, in your mind the PT is awarded. scrap the PT and award "just a PK" to attackers and they'll feel hacked off ... the otherw ay around and attckers will be still hacked off as you award a defending PK

IMO. YMMV
