Scenario: open play kick into in-goal, defender catches it and calls mark.
Upon calling mark, the referee stops the game and awards a free kick (17.3). The ball is thus dead (Definitions, Dead). Play restarts with a FK on the 5m line closes to where the mark was called.
Also: 12.12.b - play is restarted with a GLDO when an attacking kick is grounded or made dead in in-goal.
I think everyone would expect the mark to be awarded, yes? It seems preferable for the defenders. But an attacking captain could reasonably make the case that it should be a GLDO instead, and would not be clearly wrong.
