How long do you wait to blow up play after a player was initially held up in goal.

I've known referees who interpret it as the player with the ball has an instant (the same instant in the field of play they would have to play the ball), while others would allow the player with the ball 10-15 seconds to try and wrestle the ball to the ground.

Law 22.10 says
When a player carrying the ball is held up in the in-goal so that the player cannot ground the ball, the ball is dead.

But how long do you wait to consider the player cannot ground the ball?

3-4 seconds tops.
Certainly not 10-15. That's an eternity

3-4 seconds can feel like an eternity when everyone is focused on the struggle.

(If you're involved with the game, it's possible what looks like 10-15 seconds is actually only 3-4.)

Very good advice I was given (from this site) was to shout "Ground It" after 2 - 3 seconds. If they can't, it's obviously been held up. Just blow up and say "Held up in goal lads. 5m scrum. Red ball" .... and nobody complains.

I've tried it and it works.

If ref calls "ground it" and a player prevents that - is that an offence?

Why a time limit?

The Scots showed that standing around like spare priques at a wedding to allow a stalemate is not a likely outcome. . . . and it's to the defending side's advantage to make sure he's put over the DBL. . . so play on.:hap:

Because a player on the ground must do something IMMEDIATELY :)

Almost every ballcarrier who attempts to score a try and finds the ball is held up, other than Will Carling.

I thought we were discussing PLAYERS held up, not a hand under the BALL and few if any players on their feet.

Yes, looks like the OP asked about the PLAYER being held up.

2-5 seconds depending on how it got in there.
Maul - 2 seconds ish
A covering tackle - 4/5 seconds or until the momentum has stopped.

You can't have a maul in goal.

... a hand under the BALL.... /

That's a popular one I find - PEEEEP..Try! - "but I've got my hand under it"

My take is unless you look like Kenny Everett as Brother Lee Love that's a fairly unconvincing argument.

But why a time limit, please?

In the FoP you let them get on with it. Why should a ref think he should call a halt in goal with all those players around to sort it out?
