To be clear as a cannot find the law that addresses this;
When the attacker knocks on, over the try line, what is the decision?
defensive 5m scrum?
22m DK?
Tryline DK?

It's a goal line drop out. One of three occasions there can be one.

Law 12.12
Play is restarted with a goal line drop-out when :
a. The ball is played or taken into in-goal by an attacking player and is held
up by an opponent.
b. An attacking kick, other than a kick-off, restart kick following a score, drop
goal, drop-out or penalty attempt, is grounded or made dead in in-goal by
the defending team.
c. An attacking player knocks on in the opponents’ in-goal.

My understanding is 12.12c is for a knock on in goal. Knock on from the FOP into in goal is a scrum.

surely the bnuance here is "OVER the try line".

So does the OP means the attacker is OVER the try line when knocking on ie is in goal.

Or did the OP mean the knock on GOES over the try line ie happens in the Field of play ?

Good question. I meant the knock on occurred in goal, not from the field of play into the in goal area.

it happened last weekend to me, and fortunately I guessed right per law 12.12 above (thanks Phil). The guy made a brilliant break from halfway, and with two players to beat chipped it past them perfectly, it sat up for him over the try line, and he knocked it on!

his team were getting pumped as well so it was a real disappointment.
