Watched the highlights of Aus v SA this morning. Well worked first try for SA at a line out.
I have it in my head that you cannot pre-bind onto a ball carrying team mate as it's dangerous but can't find a law reference.
Clearly when the ball is passed back to Etzebeth his teammates bind onto him and drive before any Aussie has engaged.
Have I just dreamt this? It looked wrong to me.
whilst appreciating there are already other subjective invisible lines (10m/5m/2m etc) nonetheless this just creates yet another subjective line, having to be decided upon by a referee stood maybe 15-20m away at an oblique angle, possibly with obscured vision if on the defending team's side of the lineout (ie not in the "zipper" position).I hope world rugby come out and clarify 0.5m from mark of touch is out of lineout and specifically allows this type of play.
I think Ciaran, that it is very difficult to see that as a flying wedge, any more than the usual catch-and-drive from the Lineout. The one Aussie defender was pretty much straight into defend it and in real time it looked fine. There are lots of line out moves that are marginal especially at the top end of the game where players"drop out"/peel etc. and very difficult for the ref to be on top of all of it.
For the record I thought this SA line out was perfectly legal. 1st pod jump for the ball and catch and pass it back to second pod who never moved from LoT.
Great to see innovation in the game. I just questioned whether once they move off the line it is a Flying wedge.
