As part of NZ's referendum to change its flag, they have shortlised 4 designs.

Which do you think is best?

Try this view, it helps you see them as actual flags rather than drawings

Top right for me. I would be happy with all except bottom left.

I am pro changing the flag.

What is the background to bottom left? Is it a Maori reference?

Someone asked me that in a PM a week or two ago. Here is what I wrote

----

The curl design is the "koru". (a Māori word meaning "loop"). Its based on the shape of a new unfurling silver fern frond.

It symbolises new life, growth, strength and peace and is a symbol that is strongly represented in Māori art, carving and tattoos.

NZ"s National Airline, Air New Zealand has displayed a stylised "koru" on the vertical stabilisers of their airliners for many years.

various british newspapers are rather confused about the process, so it may help non New Zealanders to note that there are now going to be two referendums

- First referendum will select one of these four as the proposed new flag.
- Second referendum will ask new zealanders to choose between retaining the existing flag, or adopting the proposed new one.

If a new flag is chosen New Zealanders will be free to continue to fly the old one if they want, as an unofficial emblem, but all govt buildings and official usage would switch to the new flag.

I think this looks rather dashing myself.

I like top left. Retains the Southern Cross and a bit of colour from the old one with image/colour that is unmistakenly New Zealand.

Top right looks like a revamped NZRFU logo. Bottom left needs too much explanation and/or looks like a rams horn or a black elephant having a drink. Bottom right is a bit like top left but I think the black looks better with the fern.

As an aside. I like any flag that displays the Union Flag as it guarantees getting it the correct way up!

I notice the Chinese managed to get it upside down at the IAAF World Championships.

Perhaps if the Scots had left the UK it would have meant those w*****rs who fly the Union Flag in their garden wouldn't keep hanging it upside down.

Anyway if I had a vote it'd be for top left!

Hardly anyone waves the current NZ flag at sporting events as far as I've noticed.

Is the issue to do away with the colonial past or to differentiate the current flag from the Australian lookilikee? Or both?

It's the only one with no black in it. :(

Top right looks more like a logo. Bottom left may be meaningful to New Zealanders but not to anyone else.

I don't really like any of them. I'm glad I don't have to choose.

So instead of having two referendums as explained, why don;t they have one referendum with the current flag added to the choices?

That's no fun. Only the New Zealanders can make a flag contest more complicated than the Ranfurly Shield.
