the "offside by QTI" thread got me wondering.

Blue #10 kicks from his/her 22 and it (the ball) is caught by Red #15 on his/her 22.

Blue #6 has chased the kick from an onside position and wrapped up Red #15 (no tackle, both on feet).

Blue #6 successfully rips the ball from Red #15 and ball travels a few metres towards Blue goal line.

A retiring Red player picks up the ball.

is he/she offside?

Yes...

EDIT Sorry ...misread that thought ball was picked up by 'rippers' teammate!

So NO!

I would agree. A ball carrier who has had the ball ripped hasn't "played" it. But I'm sure it would look wrong.

[LAWS]A player is offside in open play if that player is in front of a team-mate who is carrying the ball or who last played it.[/LAWS]

When blue rips, he is the last player to play the ball.
So red are onside

It's open play
[LAWS]10.1 A player is offside in open play if ...
10.2 A player can be offside anywhere in the playing area.[/LAWS]

Accepted (and well pointed out ;-) , but "A player is offside in open play if ...that player is in front of a team-mate who is carrying the ball or who last played it." So, as per Crossrefs #4. Which is why we say (or should say) "Ripped in the tackle. Play on" or similar as per 11.5.b.

I suppose you could look at what you would allow the red player to do. Say the ball was ripped towards blue line by blue, retrieved by blue. Would you allow a retreating red player to tackle blue now in possession? I think yes, therefore we are in open play and no offside, therefore they can also pick up the ball (if blue hadn't got there first!)

Looks wrong, but it isn't.

Good, loud communication is the key here.
