Hi

Can players from the same side bind onto the ball carrier before going in to contact with an opponent?

You ofter see forward join/bind with the bll carrier before making a dash for the line.

Thanks

Huw

To support what Crossref has said; the answer is affirmative.

However, it should not be more than one team-mate (otherwise it could be interpreted as a "Flying Wedge"), and make sure that the supporting player is behind the ball carrier; otherwise the player is causing an obstruction.

You also need to be aware that this type of play is usually seen (and executed) close to opponents goal line to help gain extra metres. As a referee we need to ensure that once the ball carrier goes to ground the supporting player (teammate who is bound on) doesn't create a block to the defence trying to contest for the ball. In other words, as soon as the ball carrier goes to ground he/she needs to roll/move away and ensure the ball is available.
