Not sure what division you've got, but SFGG beat OMBAC last weekend in Mens Premier as a SL Warm-up.

I reffed the Sac Lions v. SFGG 2 years ago- lots of hard running polynesians that contest the tackle area pretty vigourously. They will try to get under your skin and show little respect for the laws, but will enventually get on with the game, though don't make the mistake of turning your back on them. Expect a lot of fast rugby and quick-phase ball that is heavily contested at the breakdown, with the hopes of a few phases to disorganise the defence and then create space out wide and let the speedy Fijians or Tongans take-over.

If you're at SFGG, you'll see their new pitch on Treasure Island, which is pretty sweet. In Sacramento, you'll likely be hosted by Jim Crenshaw, who is a great guy. Hopefully you can make it out to Dead Fish if you're in San Francisco. Fun times.

It's at SFGG; not the SL game but the D1 game.

Yeah, I saw the Polynesian influence. Normally very hard and borderline high tackles. Were there any management problems there?

Not really. Both teams put in big hits, but there was never any retaliation by the tackled-player; they more or less knew they'd just been hit back to last Tuesday.

The only thing I remember from a management standpoint was the Sacramento coach who was trying to get in my ear the entire time, and was fuming when I penalised his team for a ball-carrier going into contact while blatantly forearming his opponent.

I suspect they'll settle down pretty quickly. I found all that polynesian rage soon dies down after a few minutes.

One other thing....don't point at a polynesian player....if you need to talk to one, say captain, #6 please, don't point and say you ....and when you are speaking to them, I had to be careful since I talk talk with my hands, to not use my finger and point my point home..

Judah, since when did you become an advertising board for Setanta? What's the cut that you get from clicking on the link? Who gets the money? Is this money to support waxing your chest or head? I'm sure you could ask the SPCA to help you out, you endangered baboon.

Judah - bad news.
Most of the endangered species reproduce artificially, not naturally.

If you have real suspicions that the game will start with fighting, get a team of three. Get the TJ's to flag for anything and everything they can in the first ten minutes to let the players know they wont get away with it.

Sadly this comes from experience of two games this season, when allsorts was kicking off behind my back, and I still caught four and red carded them, but assessor said I still missed too much!

I'm just curious - why? If you normally talk with your hands, why should you change your style just because of the player to whom you're speaking?

I'm not much of a hand-talker personally, but why shouldn't I point to identify a player (especially if I don't have a number, but some other identifying feature, like a scrum cap or whatever) and then beckon him over?

In their culture it is a sign of disrespect. It is a cultural thing, which as a referee we should be aware of and respect, regardless if that is our habit.

But you can't get blood from a stone, or TJ's from thin air! Referee shortage in the states...unless you are doing a national match, chances of having a TJ are slim.

A ref's coach with a DVD player, what luxury. I have to struggle with a 20 year old Volvo and a radio that kicks in, sometimes.

Here's a very abbreviated report

First up - if NorCal ever invite you for exchange - take it. Trust me. Spent Friday going round wineries and Sonoma before a good spirited High School game. Then dinner and bed. By this time, because of travel, I'd been up for 24 hours straight.

Saturday to the game. Good news and bad news:
For a variety of reasons the game was a blow out.
On the other hand, Sacramento were a joy to watch. All Islanders, the hands and the power were just terrific. And it's really difficult to screw it up too badly for an assessor when it's that bad a scoreline!

And thence to dinner with a large number of the NorCal society as well as the guests from British Victoria. Beer, good company, and some lovely gifts from NorCal.

Just a great rugby weekend, and one I can't recommend enough.

And I realized a dream when I finally got to meet Bruce Carter. ;)
