Today I have had to delete about 6 or 7 SPAM threads (all porn). I think I spotted that Nick has dealt with at least a couple too.

All posted by 'registered users'.

Also noticed (as I have been deleting the 'users') that the same couple of IP addresses and e-mail domains have been used. Tried looking through the Admin panel, but couldn't find a way that we could prevent people who have an e-mail address with the 'dirty' domains from signing up.

I have also deleted quite a number. I choose "physically delete". I see no reason to leave them lying around.

I'm with OB - I physically delete the offending material too. I too have banned several newly registered users, and noticed a few common IP addresses.

I have asked Robbie before about IP blocking, but never received a response. Until (if?) he resurfaces, it seems that we will just have to maintain our vigilance.

Gents,

We seem to be having another period of high spam/porn traffic. To that end, I have added two new user infraction levels - "Pornography" and "Spam on first post after registration" - both of which result in an instant and permanent ban.

My opinion is that the types of post we're deleting at the moment do not deserve a warning - please use these new levels and nuke the offending users the minute you catch them.

Many thanks for your vigilance.
Paul

I'm on board. I just unwrapped my new identity (I feel like Christian Slater in "My Own Worst Enemy", I don't know if I am Edward or Henry right now), and I'll get to work with you guys in blitzing these buggers.

Gents, I appear to be in the inner sanctum. Am I supposed to be here?

Pablo, your PM to me is being blocked by my computer thingy.

during the day I see 'active users' appear that obviously aren't genuine participants. Am I able to expunge them before they post?

Dickie,

Shoot first and ask questions later; why break with tradition!

Please feel free to do so! I removed about 20 users yesterday who hadn't posted but had adverts for pills or pr0n in their profile fields. One particularly imaginative entity had the username "SuperBuyViagra". So subtle, I almost though it was genuine

OK, I just went through the first two lines of the list of posters who have visited in the last 24 hours, and Zapped TEN of them.

I actually have a lot of work to do this morning, and I have an MBA exam this evening, so I can't spend all day zapping.

If we each take a few lines, and click on the ones we don't recognize, we can probably clear them out. Their occupation/location/etc makes it fairly obvious, they either flat out admit they are trying to pitch:

Porn
Pharma
Cheap Software

or they have "Test" or something else random in the fields.

I'd also like to propose a motion to the floor that we consider shutting down the thread that is available to non registered users. I know Robbie created it during World Cup season when there was an influx of interested people, but right now it seems to just be attracting a lot of junk.

All in Favour?

Great idea. If people are serious enough about asking questions, they can sign up in 2 minutes.

No objection from me. It's worth noting however that many of the more recent spam posts have actually been from registered users. I cannot find a way in the Admin CP of blocking IP addresses, which would have been useful.
