.... to be shot down.

Ruck has formed and is in progress.

Player arrives from a legal direction but fails to bind.

Without any other offences, is he not offside?

Just asking because if he is, then this is easier to call than almost any of the other possible ofences.

Glyndwr - if its 30 years since you refereed you must either be a very old man or a very young referee :D Havent come across you on the forum before. Hi!

Anyway Id recommend watching this video on not binding during ruck entry:

My take is very simplistic - if he's not bound then the offence is that of not being bound - ping away!

I'm not sure why a player would intentionally enter a ruck & not bind :chin:

Ask Bakkies Botha! :wow:

Point taken but Glydwr says: "Without any other offences, is he not offside?"

I took this to mean gentle ruck entry.

the materiality comes into play then. There are so many offenses it is important to know when not to blow whistlep

I took it to mean - if we ignore all the other potential offences, so as not to get hung up on all the binding, dangerous play etc. type offences, is a player who enters a ruck without binding offside?

Well if he's joined the pile of bodies, and he's not bound, assuming he's forward of the back foot, then yes, he's offside. But why does it matter, he still has to bind, so ping him for that!

Other than charging in illegally to clear an opponent away I cannot see what the point of entering a ruck without binding on to a team mate would be.

Ihave no idea of the point of the question either.

The not binding would come to mind well before the offside for me as well.

I suspect we're mainly talking about the sentinel position - ie waiting to nobble the 9 early, block the p&d or (if you win the ruck) take the ball up. All of these things are arrant cheating / law bending. I always bound as a player - mainly so I could lean on the back for a rest!
