Black drop out. About 5 players massively in front of the ball at the time he kicked. I award scrum on the 22 to red, but not sure at all that was right. Comments please?

Taffy, depending on the situation as you dont confirm in your initial post if they were in front of him before he kicked it or they were retiring, but Law 13.16 covers you. Massive preventative call can help in this one.

13.16 The kicker’s team
(a)

All the kicker’s team must be behind the ball when it is kicked. If not, a scrum is formed at the centre of the 22-metre line. The opposing team throws in the ball.

(b)

However, if the kick is taken so quickly that players of the kicker’s team who are retiring are still in front of the ball, they will not be penalised. They must not stop retiring until they have been made onside by an action of a team-mate. They must not take part in the game until they have been made onside in this way.

Sanction: Scrum at the centre of the 22-metre line. The opposing team throws in the ball.

Then you were right in your call to bring them back and award a scrum to the non offending team.

Things like this you can manage out of the game though mate, a big shout to whoever the kicker is to "make sure all his players are behind him" helps or just a general shout of "behind the kicker" this means you have tried to prevent the offence taking place and is one less scrum/PK against you on the sheet lol

..... or just hang out on this site and get a twofer: Law references that vaguely apply to the event and lots of varying opinions.

I agree with the value you attach to this site for discussion/opinion/advice however, It really doesn't take that long to work your way through the law book. Quickly read a law section per night making a note of any part you either don't understand or have a problem with. Repeat the process and within a couple of months of the off season, your law knowledge will improve greatly. Then, or during the process, ask those questions about the laws you noted either here or with your society/other referees. It won't take too long before you are way better informed than 6 or 8 weeks ago.
Application of your new found knowledge is another matter and this is where I have found this site to be a valuable resource. Do yourself a favour, AR games for experienced referees, it will help in your development and will give you the opportunity to ask those referees for some advice or clarification.
Get to know your local Education Officer. They are usually the type of people who love a good law discussion.

In short, this is a great site but to become a better referee you need to utilise more resources than just this site. Reading the law book, IMO, is step 1.

Spot on. As referees we need to refer to our "bible" from time to time and not rely on others to do all the work for us.
