Game type: ULU Cup & League Double Header
Level: 90 (I believe)
Date: 18 Jan 04
Kick off: 2:15 pm
weather: mild and dry turning cold in second half.
Pitch condition: Good

Maybe I was expecting to much, but as you can see from the scoreline this was a pretty one sided game. Imperial firlding a team of only 14, and Guys just scraping 15 I knew it was going to be a long game from the kick off when the ball dribbled onto the 10m line.

Guys decided to play it though and so the game was started, it took approx one and a half minutes for guys to get their first try, and the trend just carried on.

Imperial were playing with the one less in the scrum, hense their scrum was no match for Guys, who just kept running and rucking that Imperial was running out of players and energy fast.

The game continued and at half time Guys had scored 9 tries and had managed to convert one, Imperial had not even got near Guys 22.

Into the second half and the Imperial have started off well, running and rucking and keeping possession of the ball, all until an injury to their full back happened. No one seems to have seen what happened but the girl was very shaken and incoherent. One of the guys players came over to help as she was a final year med student (which was very handy) and the girl was taken to the side of the pitch, the guys player suggested an ambulence be called to be on the safe side as no one knew if it was a head injury or not.

Imperial were obviously demoralised by this as the fullback had easily been their best player, they asked if it was possible to concede, but being only 50 minutes into the game, and the fact that it was a league game I obviously had to look at the wishes of Guys. They were not willing to stop the game, understandably as they were doing well and could pick up a lot of points in the league for a good score. I pointed out to Imperial that there was no safety reason for me to stop the game, the captain agreed. I was then a bit miffed that the Imperial Coach was suggesting that we just call it an hour and make up a score to whatever Guys wished, not exactly how the game is to be played, and of course the idea was not even entertained.

The game started again and from that point on guys once again went on the rampage getting try after try, 10 minutes later and the captain approached me and requested that the game be conceded now and that it is their right to concede after an hour, I explained that no one can make the team play however it would be noted that the game was stopped because of her team refusing to carry on and not on any safety grounds and that it could effect their league standing. Once again she agreed, and got her players moving.

To their credit Imperial stuck at it to the end of the game, and tried to gain some points, but it just wasn't their day, with a minute to go and the score at 94 - 0 I informed the teams that this would be the last minute, the ball was kicked successfully (only the second time in the game) over the 10m line and guys once again went running, as they got to the 5 m line the guys player went to pass to her right, a certain try under the posts, but spilled the ball as she went down, so Guys chance of breaking the 100 point margin vanished and the end of the game was signalled.

I have to admit I felt sorry for Imperial, had they had a full team things could have been so different for them, and they played their hearts out, I feel it was only their coach that destroyed their morale after the injury, it's never nice to be on the end of a thrashing, but they did their best, and you couldn't have asked for more. Credit also has to be given to the Guys captain, she kept her team motivated and mobile, and had a strong sense of humour all the way throughout, including a moment when she could have scored a try (She's a prop) only to have a team mate ground it and stood up and shouted at her 'Now that was just selfish!" her humour was a big contributing factor in keeping a good feel to the game.

So overall, not the most skillfull or the fastest game I;ve ever done, but an experience for us all nevertheless.
