This is from an early-90s match in the USA between Wigan and Warrington, intended to spread the game over there. Which obviously was a raging success, just ask Cody. One of the many things they used to make the game more comprehensible was this strange innovation of putting a microphone on the referee, so that the TV audience could hear what was being said. Includes subtitles for those who have mislaid their Kippax-to-English dictionaries.

Warning: this video contains scenes of contested Rugby League scrums that some forwards may find disturbing. Particularly the novel hooking technique on display at about 2 minutes in.

Thank Jebus that League has moved on since then!

Interesting technique. I think I might lose marks for trying that nowadays

You forgot his official title: Mr Holdsworth from Kippax.

That's how I remember him

Just what I was thinking.

Sorry, but that was painful to watch and I only managed 45 seconds. :frown:

Seriously, mute it if you have to, but just skip ahead to 2:04 and watch the hooker.

1. Shaun Edwards with curls. Wow.

2. Doesnt Jo Lydon coach somewhere now?

3. These players seem so non-plussed by the referee. Was he like this at EVERY game?

What was wrong with that?"

I speak to players like that all the time.

Les Boyd was a dirty b@stard even by Australian standards.

There was some fresh faced youths in there. Edwards, Betts,Hampson, Lydon, Paul Cullen and the unfortunate Mike Gregory

Of course he did. He was (believe it or not) the top knobber in RL after Billy Thompson until the arrival of Cummings and Smith

Looks like there is a 400m track around the pitch and, for safety, the touch lines are well short of the track

On a pitch that narrow, it's no wonder tempers run so high.
