Off of a kickoff red are kicking to blue. Blue 10 attempts to catch the ball on the 22, he fumbles it backwards behind the line, at this point the ball bounces behind the line, and then forward to a blue player ahead of blue 10, what do you call?

Could the "offside" player reasonably have avoided playing the ball?

If yes then PK

If no then I'd treat it as "accidental" and go with a scrum.

Maybe not accurate in law but for me equitable.

Play on. Open play
No 10 fumbles the ball backwards...end of his play and is not in control of ball
blue player ahead of 10 was not passed to. No accidental offside.

The player is in front of a team mate (#10) who last played the ball. He's clearly offside.

DEFINITIONS

In general play a player is offside if the player is in front of a team-mate who is
carrying the ball, or in front of a team-mate who last played the ball.

Offside means that a player is temporarily out of the game. Such players are liable
to be penalised if they take part in the game.

11.1 OFFSIDE IN GENERAL PLAY
(a) A player who is in an offside position is liable to sanction only if the player does one of three
things:
Interferes with play

Offside in open play. I would say at the lower level, go with accidental (player likely to be surprised that the ball came their way). Higher levels - timing is everything. Could the play have avoided it, did they prevent an opposition player play the ball etc. So either PK or scrum depending....

Let's cover this logically and in sequence.

Blue plays the ball and its first direction of travel is toward Blue's goal line (backward) so no knock-on.

Question then arises; does it matter where the next blue player to touch the ball was in relation to the blue 10? Yes, because although the first movement of the ball was backward the player was stood in front of the Blue 10 and had not been played onside.

IMHO
