I've wrestled with this concept during other conversations, and it is something hard to come to terms with, but is a fact of rugby... is there anything you can really do if the ball carrier slides for the goal line from a few metres out... is there anything you can do if their seriously rapid winger makes a clean break from 60m out... in 99% of cases the answer to both is no, but I imagine most people are more comfortable with the latter. Unless the defenders are already in the correct position to defend, then you're screwed.
