Replacement or Substitute

Got asked at work what we should say on the big screen when a change take place.
Was just about to launch into the Replacement v Substitute description when I thought I had better check in the book first.

2017: Replacement for injury, Substitute for tactical change.

2018: Replacement for everything. The word Substitute doesn't appear anywhere in the 2018 law book.

I don't think so. If anything it makes it simpler as no one apart from referees really understood the difference.

Yes. If replaced, you can't come back on. If substituted, you can.

It keeps it clear in my head when I call them

• Tactical Substitution and
• Injury Replacement.

It's surprising how many don't know the difference.

So I think it's just a change in nomenclature with no actual impact on the Law

To Phil's original question. I'd avoid both those words on the big screen. I'd just go with SMITH : OFF JONES : ON or some graphical depiction (eg red arrow & green arrow)

I can see your point, but if Phill can make things clearer for the spectators that can only be a good thing surely. :chin:

fair point but if you put up "replaced" then that player comes back on cos the doctor/ref/whoever said he could, then egg on someone's face

lets just use interchanges everywhere.
Works fine in Nat 1 and below.

Not according to the 2018 law book.

You can be replaced for injury OR tactically replaced. The word Substitute is not in the new law book, not even in the definitions.

[LAWS]PERMANENT REPLACEMENT
20. A player may be replaced if injured. An injured player may not return once replaced.[/LAWS]

[LAWS]Tactically replaced players may return to play only when replacing:
a. An injured front-row player.
b. A player with a blood injury.
c. A player undertaking an HIA.
d. A player who has just been injured as a result of foul play (as verified by the match
officials).
e. The nominated player described in Law 3.18 or 3.19.[/LAWS]
