Having played in an era where scrum hats were only just coming in, I've never worn one.

How much do they impair hearing?

I found the thing they impair most is you peripheral vision.

They are not too bad, unless it is windy, then you cant hear a thing.

I think that puts you back in the Victorian era! I'm not sure when they were first used, but Wavell Wakefield certainly wore one in the 1920s.

I think that puts you back in the Victorian era! I'm not sure when they were first used, but Wavell Wakefield certainly wore one in the 1920s.

My father had a fairly primitive one made of leather in an old trunk that he had worn when he played for O.U. in the 1940s. My mother wouldn't go anywhere near it, for years she thought it was a jock strap.
