Collegiate men's 7s. Ball carrier dives across try line with no defender within 20 meters. Ball is in one hand. He moves his arm and hand directly down, but ball slips from his hand around 2 ball widths distance from the pitch surface. Ball, however, drops straight down, and then bounds forward after contacting the ground. Ball carrier did not regain possession before whistle and try awarded. Is this correct? Thanks.

Your description is a bit confusing, but it sounds like you think the ball was not knocked on ("went straight down and then bounds forward" - is NOT a knock on). If the player then grounded the ball it should be a try.

On the other hand, it is rather unlikely that a player running forward can drop the ball and it not be a knock-on, so perhaps the referee was unsighted and just missed the drop?

The correct part is the referee the referee believed the player had either hold of the ball as it grounded or had exerted downward pressure and that the ball had not gone forward from his hand before it hit the turf. If that is what he saw then he was correct.

Chris Ashton? What on earth is the point of diving when there is no opponent anywhere near?!

If the player loses contact with the ball before grounding it and it does not go forward, he can subsequently ground it for a try. If he fails to ground it, no try. If it goes forward before hitting the ground, no try.
