Is there much buzz in England for the upcoming Games?

Probably a bit more in England than the rest of the UK. Especially in the Midlands where it will happen. However not much. Things will probably pick up when the Athletics World Champs finish on Monday and the various media can change their attention to the next event.

The Commonwealth Games - where Britain's finest professional athletes take on the best postmen, electricians and taxi drivers the Commonwealth has to offer.

Going to see the 7's where the current best rugby 7's teams will all be playing almost like being in Dubai:
Or some of the best netball teams:

swimming is highly biased towards multiple medals options. Even track similarly. particularly as there are the various relay options on top of the individual ones. The velodrome to some degree also.
Id not want to necessarily suggest some of the options (relays/) should be ditched but it doesn't sit comfortably that Steve Redgrave can win 5 medals over a space of 16 years, and somebody else can win 6 in one games.

Swimming is just silly, all swimming should be freestyle

It's as though we had
200m running
200m skipping
200m running backwards
200m jumping
200m walking
200m sideways running

Etc
(And, yes, walking races are equally silly)

What complete tosh! Different diciplines / styles.

What else?

One jumping event not High / long and triple?

One throwing event not discus / shot / javelin and hammer?

Diving Just one board not different hights / spring board?

Walk racing is highly technical. Try it one day.

athletics at it's best is when it's simple and pure : Fastest, Highest, Furthest.

So yes
- long jump is pure (Furthest) - but should be freestyle, no restrictions on the type of jump, the Delamere flip should be legal
- high jump is pure (Highest) - but should be freestyle, no restrictions on type of jump, allow take off from two feet)
- triple jump is long-jump in a silly way. Get rid of that

Diving - is not athletics, that's a performance sport, judged subjectively with points/10 so a different conversation

Walking - is just running in a silly way. We could equally have running but your left arm moves with your left leg. Get of it

Throwing events - they are pure (Furthest) (but do they also have odd restrictions on technique - throwing in a particular way?). Throwing very different objects is like running different distances, so makes sense. The particular objects we have are a bit random, though.

Exactly! They are all technically DIFFERENT. Just as different swimming strokes are different in terms of technique.

A I say try Speed Walking you might find it a lot more difficult and disciplined than you think. You may open your eyes.
