Doesn't the post itself count as 'in goal' not just the base?:chin:

My book's packed away ready for Uni now so I'm not going to check, but if we go with a common sensical approach, if the post wasn't there to touch the ball against, you'd be touching down on fresh air, that is to say not touching down at all. The base of the post prevents you from touching down, though, and so a try is awarded.

And if the ball had been kicked downfield, and a winger is chasing - definitely going to get there, and will only need to pick it up and fall over the line to score a try. A Spectator decides to burst onto the field and kick the ball away.

Ref can rule a try, where they think it is most likely to have been scored.

In this case the ball doesn't even get to the line, but it isn't a PT either.

1.Post base 2. On the line 3. Penalty try 4. From touch-in-goal 5. from dead ball line.

Final count now six?

That being; 6. Against try line obstruction/s*

* other than defender, but includes the Ref., Dogs, Beer tray, Spectators etc.
