Does that mean George Clancy is now the best referee in Ireland? :)

I've always liked AR. Good luck to him.

Shame to see him go. Very good referee.

Disturbing to see what is left in the Irish pot:

Clancey, Fitzgibbon et al. Worrying!

He's reffed a world cup final. And showed cojones the size of Patagonia in a semi. He can be proud of his achievements, as can all of Ireland!

My abiding memory of him will always be watching a France v Italy 6Nations game, where he seemed to ref the entire game in French. Little weird I thought, until I read that most of the Italian team played in France at that point!

My favorite ref... :'(

Hard lost for IRB Panel and IRFU. Clancy is far away from Rolland's level!

My favourite AR comment was to Steve Borthwick as Saracens captain.

AR: Captain have a word with your players about questioning my decisions.
SB: Which ones?
AR: Start at 9 and work outwards!

Technically one of the best. Mgmt style at times could be overly harsh.

He will be missed

a role model for many as an outstanding referee who had a long career.

one of the few elite ex-players to make it to elite referee before the days of academies, fast-tracks, etc.

technically one of the very best, but he could get wound up on occasions. His 2007 RWC Final appointment was well earned.

hopefully he will be tempted to take up a career in referee development, but he has a full time job as a finance broker already.

A no nonsense referee, a la Norman Sanson ( sorry some of you youngsters will not even know who he was)

The older and more well versed will remember him, with respect.

Great referee imo, but will always be remembered for Sam Warburton's red card wherever you agree with the decision or not.

And that is a shame, he is much more than that. However, at least he got that call right!
