I have to give him respect for saying he got it wrong. I've read his explanation of his view and that of the TMO and understand why he came to that call. But the TMO has access to other angles and they could've and should've been looked at too. Shouldn't they have?

Full marks to him
BUT Michael Cheka revealed , and it's been in the press also , that WR already announced to all the AI coaches and referees at a conference two weeks ago that the decision was wrong. So it was already out there

What are people's thoughts?

Kudos! That must have taken a lot of courage.

I believe this can only increase respect for him, and for referees in general.

Wonder if others will follow suit?

Well obviously JP must have been in the loo during the announcement at that conference.

I bet JP doesn't follow AG's lead

It is worth noting that RFU panel referees are required to review their own performance and inform their Match Observer if they think they have made a mistake. I hope the same is true for Internationals.

From the AG interview:

“I think we need to see a wrap with both arms, and I think in hindsight – although he got pinned – there wasn’t a big enough wrap from both arms, really. There was a wrap with one arm, but there wasn’t a wrap with the other arm.”

So . . . . a one arm tackle is not an attempt to "grasp" as the law requires?

It depends on what you were doing with the other arm.

Let's not get side-tracked with a long, one arm discussion! The referee and most of the known universe say a mistake was made and this particular 'tackle' should have been penalised. Refreshing honesty, I just wish there was more of it from ALL involved. Why does it only have to be a referee who admits a mistake, how about the coach taking back all the incorrect appealing during the game, a player apologising afterwards for cheating in a ruck?

I agree Zebra that confessing to an error is admirable, however . . . .

I'm commenting on the validity of his statement to explain his error. His explanation doesn't jive with the law.

And I would like to hear coaches and players admitting their errors and, while we're at it, announcers and fans admitting their ignorance.

Ok .. so what about ourselves

Who here has said 'yeah I think I got that wrong '

Either on field , to the capt perhaps
Or in the bar after

I certainly have

Yep, did so last weekend when I played advantage for a team making the ball dead after a knock on. I allowed a 22 DO instead of going back for the scrum.

Deliberately sought the captain out to let him know I'd checked the law and made a mistake and ask for any other feedback. Now feedback from captions and coaches does tend to be one eyed, but still valuable as you can take a nugget or two away to work on (snd ignore the rest!)

That's a very easy mistake for a ref to make

That's a very human instinct, isn't it?, but no, that way madness lies

You have to put a mistake behind you and try and ref the rest of the game without making another one.

Never - I’m barely smart enough to ref what I actually do see, let alone try and keep track of an intentional ‘balancing bias’.
