One to get OB's blood going.

1933
Scotland beat Ireland by two dropped goals (then worth four points each) to two tries (three points each) to win the Triple Crown in a match postponed from February, again stirring a rumbling unease over the value of the drop goal. The Guardian rather uncharitably noted their success came against an "unintelligent and injury-ravaged" England and a "weak" Wales … and, in case anyone was in doubt over their correspondent's view, he added Ireland were the better side as well.

Why would I get upset at Ireland losing to Scotland?

And at least they reduced the drop goal to 3 points after the war.

Perhaps all goals should be the same value, say 3 points, with a "try" simply allowing an attempt to kick for goal (and thus to earn 3 points) from place kick in-line with the grounding.

I suppose you could give a single point for the "Try" as well, so as it becomes a sort of tie breaker?

You could allow a fair catch anywhere on the field to be called as a "mark", from where a drop kick, to goal could be attempted.

This from The Times:

Many will always hold, though without any desire to change the sporting hazards of the Rugby game, that Ireland’s two tries were at least of equal value to Scotland’s two dropped goals. There it is better to leave the argument. What no-one could dispute was that both sides did their part manfully, if not always with the highest skill, in the fastest and most thrilling of the international matches.
