I know that if the ball is knocked-on into touch the non-offending side have the option of a scrum / LO.

What if the ball is passed backwards but accidentaly goes to touch? Eg imagine the BC passing to a non-existant winger. I'm not thinking of a deliberate chucking the ball off the park.

Is there still an option? Or is it just a LO?

just a LO -- as the scrum option is actually scrum for the knock on -- which din't happen here.

Current Referee grade:
Level 3
Indeed, the only thing that has happened is the ball has gone into touch. Since it happened legally (if incompetently) it is a line out.

Thanks gents. I'm pretty sure I saw an AR recommend an option in the Otago v Canterbury game a few weeks ago, and it's been bugging me ever since.
