Anyone got any details of this?

Big ban for abusive player

Rugby Union

A former Wales youth international rugby player has been banned for 48 weeks for verbally abusing match officials.
James Egan was sent-off while playing for St Joseph's against Clwb Rygbi Caerdydd in January 2015.
Egan played for Wales Under-19s in 2007 and the Under-20s a year later.
The duration of the ban means he will not be able to resume playing until 1 March 2016 once the close season has been taken into account.

The WRU website doesn't give any more information. See HERE.

I don't think the details of WRU disciplinary hearings are made public.

"Not exactly young" you cheeky sod. I'm old enough to be his dad, but not quite old enough to be his grandad.

48 weeks for abuse does not strike me as "big" - rather, lucky it wasn't longer

This one is a bit odd
G K Evans (Llanybydder RFC) sent off for verbal abuse of match officials (Law 10.4.S/M) in the match against Llandeilo RFC on 27th December 2014. Red card expunged. G K Evans is free to continue playing the Game (personal hearing).

what's a 'personal hearing' ? Do the WRFU come to you ? Is it with the President himself ?

I presume it is the opposite of GBL (guilty by letter), when you don't have to attend the hearing.

so the implication being that of the cases reported on the page, that was the only one where the offender was present?

(or non-offender as it turned out. I wonder what his defence was. Mistaken identity perhaps).

48 weeks suggests it was a bit more than a simple "**** off".

Compared to other bans, it is big; I'm simply questioining if it's big for the nature of the offence.

Here's the recommended sanctions from Reg 17:
10.4(s)10.4(m)Verbal Abuse of Match Officials LE – 6 weeksMR – 12 weeksTE – 18+weeks52 weeks
10.4(s)10.4(m)Threatening Actions or Wordsat Match OfficialsLE – 12 weeksMR – 24 weeksTE – 48+ weeks260 weeks
10.4(s)10.4(m)Physical Abuse of MatchOfficialsLE – 24 weeksMR – 48 weeksTE – 96+ weeksLife
