A Gold player kicks the ball downfield. A Blue player, standing in touch with both feet on the ground, slaps the ball, which is still in flight but has not yet crossed the line of touch, back into the field before it crossed the touch-line. What do you do?
Incorrect - You answered C.
The correct answer is: A.
19 Definitions : A player in touch may kick or knock the ball, but not hold it, provided it has not crossed the plane of the touch-line.

so a player in touch may slap the ball as long as it has not crossed the touchline

Correct.

As long as the ball hasn't broken the plane of touch AND the player knocks or slaps the ball (he musn't hold or catch it), then the ball is not in touch.

If he catches the ball, then it is in touch.

See Law 19 definitions:

[LAWS]A player in touch may kick or knock the ball, but not hold it, provided it has not
crossed the plane of the touchline. The plane of the touchline is the vertical space
rising immediately above the touchline.[/LAWS]

It just sounds wrong, if your in touch then your in touch.

I suppose it's one that get overlooked.

Have you read Law 19!? Of all the laws to read, save this for last! You'll throw the lawbook away or burn it if you start with this one!

I suppose it's one that get overlooked.

But this bit is one that many players do know about - you see them trying to do it all the time. And clearly all refs are fully aware of it.

must be somewhere else, never in my life have i seen somebody running of the pitch to try and slap the ball back on, seen loads of players dancing with the touchline to stay on the playing field.

that's probably because if the player is infield and the ball crosses the plan of touch then they can slap/catch it and it is NOT in touch. So by staying infield they give themselves all options.

The land of the white stilletto heel, artificial tans, girls dancing round handbags, bling and old sports cars with dropped suspension... would you really want to leave all that??
