Defending Scrum offside

Reds play Blues. Reds Scrum. Defending Scrum half from Blues stands besides Red SH in usual position. After the feed it goes around and stands 5M in front of his number 10 in line with the hindmost foot of the number 8. Is he offside?

The scrum half whose team does not win possession of the ball must not move away from the scrum and then remain in front of the offside line. For that scrum half that runs through the hindmost foot of that player’s team in the scrum.
Sanction: Penalty kick

Yes is because he moved away from the scrum
No he is not because he moved away but stayed on the number 8's line so was not in front of his off side line.

Yes, he is onside given that a. he started next to the SH feeding the scrum and b. stayed behind the 'hindmost foot'. He may move laterally across the pitch.

What happens if he crosses over the number 8 - as in say the put in is on the blind side and he ends up on the open side?

On the throw in he is either beside the SH throwing in, or back 5m from his scrum's "hindmost foot".

If he starts beside the SH throwing in, he may move to an offside line in line with his scrum's "hindmost foot", anywhere across the pitch.

If he starts beside the SH throwing in, and then HIS OWN scrum win possession of the ball, he is free to move anywhere around the scrum, as long as at least one foot is behind the ball.

20.12d and 20.12e appear to state the same. At one time, for a short period, the SH of the side not winning the ball was not allowed to move away from the scrum without retreating to the offside line 5m behind the scrum. These two laws could easily be written as one now.

........in effect helps negate an obvious tactic of him drifting across to cover/target the opposing #10, if on that side, allowing at least some space for #10, if that is the option taken when the ball comes out.
