In the first half, England were on a very dynamic attack, and were getting well over the gain line. I thought that there was a ruck, and there were some lazy runners from Ireland (couldn't keep up). Ben Youngs was not able to make his first pass as players were off side, and then threw a pass into an Ireland player. Nigel did not ping for it, even though I thought it was clear his AR had called it. Any thoughts? If it was a 'new' ruck, with England standing over the ball, even though they were not in contact with an Ireland player, then the offside line goes across the field does it not?

Or the one where there had been no tackle? So no off-side lines.

I suspect the Irish player thought he was offside, else he would have caught it ...

I am seeing this answer a lot .. but a tackle doesn't create offside lines .

Offside lines come from
. A TWOL (player standing over the ball after a tackle)
. A ruck (which may or may not be preceded by a tackle)
. A maul

For Cian Healy (Green1) it was more a case of Dubito, ergo sum.

It's every player's right to be wrong as long as he doesn't infringe the laws in doing so. :)

Everyone was onside at the previous ruck, the ball was thrown into an onside player in open play.

It's one of those that looks wrong, and will have everyone on the sideline screaming "offside", but there is no tackle, no tackle with offside lines, and no ruck. So it's open play.

Looks wrong, but it isn't.

Having said that, if the PK had been given for offside I don't think anyone would have batted an eyelid about it.

Same if Nigel had given England the scrum following the maul after a kick. But it's nice to see correct decisions :)

The first element in these examples is a tackle.

no, the tackle doesn't create an offside line - it's a player standing over the ball after the tackle that creates the offside line

and a ruck can happen - and create an offside line - without a tackle

and a maul happens instead of a tackle

Not sure, but I think the point was that if there isn't a tackle, then there certainly couldn't have been a TWOL.
