OB.. responded to this question however I'm interested in thoughts of others:

Blue is awarded a FK 30 metres from their goal line.

Blue captain asks the ref if they can take the FK directly behind the mark to which the ref, of course, says yes.

Blue retire to inside their 22 and captain asks ref to confirm where the new mark is (now 20 metres from Blue goal line).

Once the ref does so, Blue opt for a scrum, which they win and kick directly into touch for gain in ground.

Kosher?

Why wouldn't the scrum be taken at the mark? You can take a fk from behind the mark, but that doesn't mean the mark has moved.

I would be suggesting that to the skipper that whatever the law says, his team's actions weren't' particularly within the spirit of the game old chap....

.. Seems odd. Carried back?

Scrum option taken then the mark for the scrum is at the location of the original infringement

Surely the mark is stil where the FK was awarded. The player is merely taking the kick behind it.

The mark hasn't moved, they are just taking the kick from behind the mark (not at a new mark).

This is easily seen, because the opposition have to be 10m from the mark, not 10m from where the kick is taken.
If the kicker moves back to take the kick, the opposition can't move forward the same amount.
