Have a senior 7s tournament coming up fast and some of my squad are pushing for places.

I have been told that the U18 rule doesn't apply to 7s (which I thing it does as the IRB variations for 7s don't make any mention of this - therefore I assume it remains the same as the standard game, i.e no under 18s in a front row).

Can anyone point me to a definitive answer please?

Spike - no way Jose.

There is no special U19 variation for Sevens and so normal regulations apply.

Get a ruling from your CB - maybe an RDO ?

or write it into the tournament regulations - "no one under the age of 18 years will be allowed to play in the three man scrum".

Thanks Simon, was my understanding just have a player who is convinced they are right. I showed them the IRB rules (variations) which do not mention the age group stuff (meaning the same applies as per the 15 man game).

He had found something relating to "elite" players which allowed players under 18 in the FR in 7s. I dismissed this as we are not elite and what they do is up to them. (U17s playing in premiership matches for example).

Thanks for the clarification.

(b) players who are aged 17 who are England Academy Players may
play and train in the front row of the scrum during contested or
uncontested scrummages when playing adult rugby if the RFU
Head of Elite Player Development has given his specific written
consent. Such consent must be given for playing or training;

Think he may be referring to this paragraph from Reg15.

Jenko just beat me to it.

Ask the player for his letter from the RFU Head of Elite Player Development and to wear his England Academy tracksuit when he shows it to you :biggrin:
