Yes, but any ball that hit the flagpost so positioned would have crossed the plane of touch.

Plane of touch doesn't come into the equation if the ball is being held - if you hold the ball across the touchline, its not in touch unless you or the ball touch the touchline or the ground beyond it.

True and good point, but the law also refers to the ball, and I presume not being carried, in which case it would by position of the flag post then be in touch or tig? Might just need a bit of a rewrite here were the powers that be to move the flags further out of the fop.

Why sweat it? It's much easier to see a ball touching the base of a flag in 3D than just a 2d line intersection.

Base of the flag. Touch in goal wherever it is grounded and touching the base. In front, by the side or otherwise.

in any event it'll be the same for both sides. Hardly matters.
