Saracens vs Wasps.

Owen Farrell

Saracens only hopes of any glory this season is the Heineken Cup and with the quarter finals in 2 weeks, is he likely to be banned for longer than that?

Presumably some mitigation from his instant remorse and previous good conduct?

Have only seen a couple of seconds of a clip.
What "instant remorse" did he show?

Hands straight up, he knew instantly it had gone wrong and he was in trouble, and he waited at the touch line for the oppo to come off and apologise / shake hands

Might be the cynic in me but "immediate remorse" is parcticed. Tackles like that need to be eradicated. England will not suffer from a ban this autum but I suspect it will be too short to send the right message.

Does Owen Farrell have a good record?

I don't follow English rugby as much as I should, but the first thing that I think about when I hear the name Owen Farrell is high tackles and shoulder charges.

As an aside, I see Gopperth kicked a lot of goals in that game.

How is he going up north? He never really made it down here, but with experience he might have improved a bit.

That was his first red card.
He has had 8 yellow cards in 297 games over 12 seasons, I am not sure how many of those were for foul play.
So yes he is of previous good character.

Gopperth seems to go quite well. Solid 10 who kicks his goals.
2447 points in 270 matches compared to 424 in 60 in Super Rugby

Kicking goals was never the issue for him as I recall. Flakiness and poor temperament let him down.

Good to see a New Plymouth lad go OK.

https://twitter.com/i/status/1302231977987313664 A lot of hysteria on this, It's high tackle. he gets sent off, end of story.
Personal opinion, he gets it wrong going for the big hit and pays the consequences.
I don't see a swing arm, it's an attempt to wrap.
The ball carrier slightly goes low as he steps and if he hadn't the tackle might have been under the arm pit and we would have been raving about a big hit.

Does anyone have any clips of Farrell going low in a tackle? He runs too many risks with his upright style.

Long overdue... His dangerous tackling style has been well known for years, and he has gotten away with tackles that other players might have been carded for.

Nothing seems to have been done to coach him out of it, so it was only a matter of time before he copped the big one.

My guess would be 2 to 4 weeks.

I think the last couple of years (since that hit at the end of ENG-SA) he's been doing a lot better at keeping low and wrapping. In the RWC he was on the receiving end of two RC high tackles.

That's a clear red, not clearly cynical (although I don't have the context of the game), I agree with Phil's estimate.

my prediction is 2 weeks.

his history of poor tackle technique was pre-RWC, it's not been a recent problem and he is highly respected, and remorseful

6 weeks is my guess

6 weeks? Assuming that he gets some kind of dis punt for remorse, pleading guilty and not eating the biscuits, you have a starting point of 9 to 10 weeks, which strikes me as a lot.

As much I think Farrell is a snidey little ****, Phil’s about right.
