Loads of 'em - mostly plying their trade in USA, but many with a deep understanding of Scottish issues, for reasons that may become clear ...

I have a question.

Is it "I'm a HR Director" or "I'm an HR Director"

I know what it sounds like but how do you write it?

Sorry for the hi-jack but believe me, if it's HR related, then it'll be more interesting than FlipFlop's question(s).

LL-P It's apparently correct both ways - 'H' is a silent vowel.

At risk of being labelled a pedant - "vowel"? Down 'ere it's called a silent consonant.

:pepper:

(Mandatory misspeelign <- here)

But it's behaving like a vowel........ Hence silent vowel.
Bit like Y in Cry.

With single letters and groups of letters pronounced as letters, be guided by the pronunciation: [...] an MCC ruling
from Fowler's Modern English Usage

So it's the silent aitch at the start of the "aitch" in "aitch are" that draws the "an"...
