Following on from a discusion I had on Saturday.
White had a QT which went forward and ref called them back for a lineout to white.

Crowd discussion was that sir had possibly got this wrong.

However, Sir may have called it back for incorrect ball. Very hard to tell from 75m away.

But, does using the wrong ball save you from being penalised for throwing it forward?

Similarly, if the receiver knocked on what should the call be?

Also if white take an incorrect QT and Red intercepted, what should the call be?

Thanks
Camquin

Good question.
My thinking is that if they take a QT with the wrong ball, then no quick throw has taken place and the game hasn't restarted so no advantage or sanction

Of course if you thought they did it deliberately in attempt to fool you I guess you could PK them

1. I guess it does, if you've spotted that it is the wrong ball.
2. Right ball, thrown forward? Then irrelevent, options to non-throwing team for the not-straight, Wrong ball? irrelevent - it was the wrong ball - nothing happened.
3. I think Advantage applies. Play on and see what happens.

If a QT is attempted when it is not a valid option, there is no sanction. The same team throws in (19.2 c & d)
If a valid QT is incorrectly taken, options to their opponents.(19.2 d)

I would allow advantage from an incorrect QT, but not from an invalid one.

I'm with OB.. here. We had that discussion some time back about playing advantage on "invalid" QTI and basically the consensus (yeah I know! we surprisingly managed to get one) was that if the QTI "didn't happen" there is neither sanction nor advantage.

Interestingly, I just had a look at the Law (new edition) and there have been some clarifications on what is invalid and what is incorrect:
[LAWS]19.2.(e) An incorrect quick throw-in occurs when:
The ball is thrown towards the opponents goal line, or
The ball is thrown in ahead of the line of touch, or
The ball is thrown in on or behind the goal line, or
Tha ball touches the ground or a player before reaching the 5 metre line, or
The thrower steps into the field-of-play when throwing the ball.
The opposing team’s choices are to elect to throw in at either:
a lineout where the quick throw was attempted, or
a scrum on the 15-metre line at that place[/LAWS]

Pierre.
