Any of you Aussies refereed Manly recently?

They on a tour of the US in a few weeks time, playing some of the premier level US teams, and I've picked up the appointment to referee them against the Army cadets from West Point. Let's just say this match will be a quick one!

I have refereed Manly before, they are a hard and fast physical teams with a number of their first team players being part of some Super 15 teams. Though I do not expect those players to be on tour (possibly some of the Fringe players).

You will have a good game, but will need to keep on top of them, they will be expecting to win and will probably be fully underestimating their opponents, and if they start to lose may get a bit frustrated, so good communication is required.

This has the ability to be one of the best games you will ever have refereed, depending on how strong the teams are. If they are near potential it should be a cracker.

Manly will also be used to having a fully miked up team of three overseeing them. Is this what is happening here?

i'm not good enough to be refereeing shute shield so I can't assist with first hand experience, but I have seen them play a few times on the TV. Pretty much as Robbie explains. From my lounge chair they tend to infringe a lot at the breakdown by deliberately slowing the ball or going off their feet - unfortunately it seems to be an allowed standard in shute shield to be tolerant of piles of bodies.

I do remember their #8 Geordie Reid is an absolute work horse and will be in everything...for mine he's their best defensive player and is probably potential for super rugby.

I have their semi final game still on my PVR so I'll check that and see what their play was like and report. until then there is a link to some of their highlights - which link to more highlights in youboob..

Thanks for the input Robbie! Much appreciated. I am definitely expecting this to be a cracking match!

As for the highlighted portion, yes, I will have a team of 3 and we will be miked up

That was fun!

I'm tired and it is late, so I'm heading to bed, but that was great. Manly won the match 50-12, and displayed some superb phases of play in doing so, however the Army lads do not quit and just kept going and going, which made for an enjoyable challenge.

Size and rugby experience were critical in this. Army were fitter, but that was not enough.

Picture 4 - Black on ground holding on. Black on far side of ruck offside?
Picture 10 - High tackle? or ducked into?
Picture 11 - FR binding?

4 - Check the lines on the pitch, offside lines were not an issue, but also that ball carrier had just gone to ground and was in the process of placing it back.

10 - That tackle was OK, he was over the shoulder making an attempt to strip it. Only had 2 high tackle issues the entire game, neither serious. These teams both hit like trains!

11 - You can't clearly see from that photo, but that scrum has not yet engaged (or Set). They got the binds across after that. Had a word with Manly about binding once, thanks to the eagle eyes of my AR on that side. Only had two collapses, both due to the pitch being a bit soft on top due to all the rain we've had.
