even though the ball is clearly moving upfield albeit its trajectory as seen from above is on an arc ?

the stationary point may be one player while everybody else circles around them.

For visualisation imagine a scrum formation where the loose head stays still but the other seven scrummagers move anti-clockwise and the ball at the number eight moves out and around as if following the circumeference of a circle?

(obviously not as scrum, the analogy purely used to illustrate etc)

didds has it about right.

Ball carrier & friends don't break off but drive to the side using the edge player as a pivot. If's useful when the ops are bigger.

It is harder to execute as the ball needs to keep changing hands to keep it at the back. Done well it's very effective.

Started the thread coz I keep seeing "rolling" when they are actually "driving".
