I'm not sure how the front row can be bound without being engaged.

Perhaps the commands should be "crouch, bind, set". I dunno, just sayin.

That puzzled me too.

However anything that makes the hit merely a way of establishing a solid scrum ("stationary and parallel") is a good thing. Then we can move to getting the feed straight.

I will keep repeating this...

There is already a long running trial that successfully reduces the hit. It is in operation in France.

The only "Trial" I have seen that changes the order of things, and requires square and stationary before the ball is fed in. Changing the words, having 3 or 4 words, allowing a pre-bind, all make no difference.

In fact a pre-bind, means all the binds will end up short (not long) as they happen before the engage, so the bodies then move closer. And we want a long arm bind.....

Another "solution" that doesn't actually deal with the problem. So much for the "specialist IRB Scrum Steering Group".

Is it me or is the technique reminiscent of when we just let the FR get on with and bind up and engage at the same time - and then when they were in position, after the odd "Give right shoulders" from the ref, the 9 put the ball in.

No, its not you. The first thing I thought of when I read this

"The "crouch", "touch", "set" engagement calls currently being trialled globally are maintained within the PRC trial but in a revision to the technique of engagement, props will be expected to bind using their outside arm after the referee has called "touch" in the sequence.

The front rows will maintain the bind and the referee will then call “set” and the two packs will be permitted to engage. In this sequence, with the props bound, the "set" call is not a command to engage, but an instruction that the front rows may come together when ready."

was this....

IMO, we are slowly working our way back to the way scrums used to be set... the 25 year experiment is almost over.
