NAME OF REFEREE: Big Fish LEVEL: L9 SOCIETY: East Midlands

MATCH TYPE: League LEVEL L8 DATE: 22nd Oct 2011

MATCH RESULT Green (17 pts) -v-Black(13 pts)

1. CHALLENGE OF THE MATCH:
The game was played on a bright day, on a hard ground with a strong wind blowing down the park favouring both sides in each half. Both sides could be accused of being tactically inept about the use of the conditions opting to kick into the wind and run the ball with the wind behind them. Both sides were also poorly disciplined at the tackle and the ruck area where most of the penalties were accrued.
There were short periods of play that were constructive with backs and forwards of both sides linking but generally poor option taking and poor handling created a disjointed game that either side could have won.
Black for the greater part of the game had the weaker pack with a tight head that lacked the technique of his opponent and who was the main cause of the resets of the scrum, causing the referee to have to change sides often in order to contain and solve the problem. Due to injury the Green Loose-head was replaced in the second half by a prop with whom he had some parity.
Early in the game the Black captain wanted to discuss every decision against his side but Big Fish put a stop to this by insisting that he get on with the game and that decisions were not open to challenge.
The game was played in general good humour and only became fractious as players tired and became frustrated.

2. MATCH MANAGEMENT:
Overall Big Fish had a steady game today. His communication with the players was good and he attempted to be preventative throughout the game.
At the set piece his engagement routine was consistent and he set up an early rapport with the players. There were seven resets at this phase, four towards the end of the game as players tired. The Black tight, head, who was not as competent as his opponent was penalised in both halves and warned in the second half; However due to an injury Green replaced their Loose-head prop in the second half with someone with whom the Black player had parity.
Big Fish’s control of the line was good. He insisted on the maintenance of the gaps, which in the windy conditions helped both throwers and gave both sides equal opportunity to challenge for the ball.
At the tackle Big Fish was quick to penalise any infringement and at this area he should have employed the sanctions to try to cut down the amount of penalties both sides gave away at this phase.
This could also be said of the ruck where he could be heard talking to players who then instead of doing what they were told, gave away the penalty.
At the maul Big Fish’s positioning was generally good. He marshalled the fringing players insisting on the backward step which in turn kept players on side. He does however become a little static sometimes and takes up positions where he cannot control the blind side of situations. This inevitably leads to frustration and fractiousness from players who may be up to some skulduggery out of his sight.
Big Fish needs to do some work on his fitness as he became a little one paced at the end of the first and second half however this did not have an impact on his control of the game and management of players and he quickly stopped the fractiousness between players when he was required to do so.
Big Fish had plenty of opportunity to play advantage today and again this phase of the game was good. Not too long or short and the situation was communicated so that players were in no doubt as to what was happening.
Big Fish’s only use of the sanctions today was in the 77th minute when he awarded a yellow card to a Black player, for a cynical tackle that prevented play after a quick penalty had been taken just over five meters short of the Black line.

3. THE REFEREE’S POTENTIAL:
Big Fish had control of this game from the start. He communicated well and both captains were soon aware of when they could approach him. He used his down time well to talk to players and attempt to get them to co-operate. He lacks a little bit of fitness and became a bit one paced at the end of the first and second half. That said he was in good position for the tries. On today’s performance he had no problems with this Level 8 game

REFEREE’S STRENGTHS - Please select up to three of the above units to outline the referee’s strengths in this match, using the Key Components descriptors.
Tackle: Good area for you today. Penalised early but need to use the sanctions in order to attempt to stop the persistent infringements.

Ruck: Another good area for you today. Communicated well and directed players. Penalised early when those directions were not heeded but again the use of the sanctions might have cut down the amount of penalties in this area.

Advantage: Without good advantage today the game could have been very stop/start. Played both tactical and territorial advantage well; not too long or short.

AREAS TO DEVELOP - Please select up to three of the above units to outline areas that need to be developed using the Key Components Descriptors.
Maul: Several times today you identified where the ball was and instead of putting yourself into a position where you could control both sides of the melee you stood square to the maul at roughly the outside half position. When the ball was rolled off down the blind side of the melee you were poorly placed to see the tacklers being driven away by off side players peeling off the maul ahead of the ball carrier. Don’t think that because that ball is on your side of the maul that it will come that way. Try to put yourself into a position where you can control both sides of the situation.

Well done.

Good report at a level up - just harden up your preventatives at breakdown (tackle / ruck) to make them effective (use commands not requests, & colours/numbers to get compliance).

If preventatives fail then escalate to warnings and finally YC (after the fourth / fifth time) - but a decent assessor will spot if your preventatives are not effective, if you use YC for smoething you should have sorted earlier.

Fitness is crucial and get mobile at tackle / ruck / maul ! As you push up higher the grades, you will need to be in the right place early to see the first offence.

Any thoughts of penalty try?

Seems ok.

Challenge of the match, err where is the challenge? Nice to know what the weather was like :wtf:

Fitness, I hate that one, one paced? So...... did you miss anything because of it? Doesnt sound like it, so it should be just given to you as advice.

Ruck given as a strength I would use that one place to work on. Get the tackle/breakdown sorted, and the rest will click.

All in all a good report though. Well done.

None at all, there were enough defenders to stop him, but it was the offside defender who decided to halt him. Advisor was happy with the decision.
