I think I remember Mike Beech saying that he'd been over there in the not too distant past, might be a place to start.

Have I been to Hungary? Yes. I hope you're not flying Magyar Air or whatever they're called.

Was it for rugby? No.

Budapest is a lovely city, and it was soooo cheap :)

I visit Budapest on business a fair bit and know a couple of guys in our office there play rugby. They are very enthusiatic, fit and athletic, and big lads.
generally Hungarians seem to be sporty outdoor types culturally.

Hungary are well down the IRB rankings at 64.

Tthey have 18 qualified refs according to FIRA-AER . Have a look at the Union's web site

Socially it is an awesome place, but increasingly known for rip-off bars & clubs, and growing intolerance to Brits due to the Stag/Hen party p*ss-artists.

Enjoy !

Enjoy !

When I was there it was still possible to have a couple of rounds of drinks and watch the dancers and still get change from $20UK

Simon S - all I can go on is heresay of course, as I am always hard at work in my hotel room :D or taking a cultural trip to an art gallery or museum.

But I have seen some interesting expenses claims for various central European cities incl Budapest, and they aren't $20UK level !

we toured there in 2004. they didn't like the Brits very much then either. i do hope that the two aren't connected in any way.

Its this tournament

http://www.ceerugby.eu/cup/

Im doing the 1800 k/o

Event kicks off at 11 and game order as follows.
13.30 Elefántok - Donau Wien (5th place decider - very tough ref
needed!)
15.45 Vitézek - Dragon Brno (runner-up position decider - two fairly playing
teams)
18.00 Bulldogok - Timisoara (very important game for the hosts - some
crunch is expected as Ukrainian coach + players meet Romanian giants)

Award ceremony at 8pm, stadium bars are open until 10 - I guess we'll have a small party there, and more to follow in the city until early. :) You're free two take your lunch and dinner in the stadium - two meals per ref is covered for you, and a couple of beers, also. Sunday's hangover may clash with
sightseeing, but your hotel will be in downtown, so a lazy lookaround is
possible before takeo

Let you know how I get on........
