"If the greatest writer of the written word would have written that story,
no one would have believed it".
I reckon that would look on a headstone.

As Gareth Edwards crashed over for 'that try', Morgan's commentary rose magnificently to the occasion: "If the greatest writer of the written word would have written that story, you'd never have believed it." Ironically, it was rugby's other great voice, that of the late Bill McLaren, which should have told the story of the try, but the Scot was forced to withdraw with flu on the morning of the game.

Now I didn't know that.

You would if you'd bought his rather wonderful and heartwarming autobiography!

a wonderful man, a superb player, an outstanding commentator and producer (not just rugby) and all round human-being.

I had the pleasure of hearing him speak post-dinner a few times - one of the best.

A difficult last few years for him and his family.

Rest in peace now one of sports' true legends.

A sad day. Never saw him play. Remember him from Question of Sport with David Vine and Henry Cooper and of course that Barbarians v All Blacks commentary. Always struck me as a nice bloke. I hope he was.

If you read the comments and the obits, you will find that as much, if not more, of the comments are about the type of man he was compared to his skill at rugby or commentary.

Seems like an appropriate time to watch "The Try" and listen to the other "voice of rugby"

I'd watch more rugby with the volume up if the commentators were like him
